Do You Avoid Going to the Dentist?
Jen Scirocco

If you are like many millions of Americans you may try to avoid going to the dentist if at all possible. Let’s face it there are many other things that you would rather do.

Although, we all know taking care of ourselves is very important. Many people do not go in for a professional cleaning and check up. There are many reasons why:

  • You many have anxiety or fear of going to the dentist due to a bad experience years ago
  • You may have stayed away for several years and are afraid of what they may say is wrong with your teeth.
  • You keep meaning to make an appointment but life gets in the way.
  • Maybe you don’t have any dental insurance and think going to the dentist is an elective expense.
  • Maybe nothing is bothering you so why say something like: “If it isn’t broke don’t fix it”.
  • People sometimes feel that I do not have dental insurance so I cannot go to the dentist.
  • What if when the dentist looks at me he or she finds is a lot more dental needs than what my dental insurance will cover.

For many of us we will get around to it tomorrow or next week. But did you now that our oral health is link to our overall health and neglecting it can lead to many health problems and diseases/illnesses? All you need to do is Google dental disease and you can see that it has been linked to the following:

  • Heart disease
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • low birth weight if Mom has periodontal disease
  • Diabetes

According to the American Academy of Periodontology research has found that bacteria that grows in the mouth can be aspirated into the lungs and can cause many respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, especially in people with periodontal disease. Further research has shown that gum disease affects one of every two Americans age 30 and older.

Dr. David Gianino and all of us on his team take oral healthcare and the trust that our patients place in us very seriously.

As you can see above, if we are able to help our patients prevent or get gum disease under control we can help them lead longer healthier lives . Dr. Gianino put a lot of thought into why people will avoid going to the dentist. Realizing that the cost of care is one of the reasons people stay away. He began working with a wonderful company called QDP (Quality dental plan).

Together they have developed an in office dental savings plan. You might ask what can this do for me and my family? Oil pulling is a type of Ayurvedic medicine (a traditional Indian system) that dates back 3,000 years involving the swishing of oil around the mouth for 15-20 minutes. This was a way to cleanse the mouth back before modern dentistry had been developed. Now, we can get the same benefits from simply swishing any mouthwash containing fluoride for 30 seconds and go on with the rest of our day.
